2025 Preakness Stakes odds and betting favorites
Betting on the Preakness Stakes is a simpler task compared to wagering on the Kentucky Derby, as the Derby helps eliminate the less competitive contenders. FanDuel Racing offers the odds for this year’s Preakness Stakes shortly before the race begins.

The Preakness always attracts a lot of betting attention whenever a Kentucky Derby winner participates. Over the past few years, the majority of Derby winners have had low odds and performed impressively in the Preakness. This has allowed bettors to focus their wagers on these horses.
In 2015, American Pharoah achieved great recognition by winning the Preakness after conquering the Derby, ultimately securing the Triple Crown title by emerging victorious in the Belmont Stakes. Similarly, in 2018, Justify added to the list of notable achievements by claiming the Preakness and going on to sweep the Triple Crown.
It is clear that this year, Mage has gained favoritism, having recently won the Derby.
However, there have been instances where the winner of the Derby did not perform admirably. For instance, in 2016, Nyquist, the Kentucky Derby champion, was overtaken in the final stretch and ended up finishing third to Exaggerator, whom he had previously defeated in the Derby. Additionally, the year 2020 is memorable as well, as Authentic, the Derby victor, came in second place after being outpaced in a thrilling stretch battle with Swiss Skydiver, who made history by becoming only the sixth filly to ever win the race.
In 2019, the winner of the Derby, Country House, was unable to compete in the Preakness due to a virus detected by the owner. Additionally, Maximum Security, who was disqualified in the Derby, also chose not to participate in the Preakness. These events had a significant impact on the Preakness, as the most prominent contenders were absent. However, this created an opportunity for bettors to find value in longshot contenders at the Preakness.
- Unlikely: considered the favorite with odds of 5-2, failed to finish in the top positions.
- War of Will emerged victorious with odds of 6-1.
- Everfast surprised everyone by finishing in second place at odds of 25-1.
- Owendale finished in third place with odds of 7-1.
- At odds of 12-1, Warrior’s Charge successfully secured a spot in the superfecta.
Common Preakness Stakes bet types
Just like the Kentucky Derby, there are several popular horse bets available for the Preakness Stakes.
- Choose the victorious horse and increase your chances of winning with reasonable odds available for the Preakness, considering the strong competition.
- Selection: Choose a horse to secure a second-place or higher finish. This betting option offers a lower payout compared to the win, but it covers the first and second positions.
- Show: Place a bet on a horse to secure a third-place position or higher. Although the payout may be lower than a win or place bet, this wager rewards you with money if the horse finishes first, second, or third.
- Exactas: Predict the correct order of the top two finishers. It is advisable to box your selections as there are few things more disappointing than having the right two horses but in the wrong order.
- Trifectas involve selecting the first three finishers in a specific order. This bet can be made in three different ways: straight, boxed with three or more horses, or by utilizing a partial wheel.
- To win, any combination of the three horses in the trifecta box must finish in the top three positions. This ticket costs $6 to purchase.
- To win, bettors must select a horse for the first position. Then, they need to choose three other horses for the second and third positions. In order to secure a victory, the first pick must win the race, while any combination of the remaining three picks must either place or show.
- Superfecta is a challenging bet where you have to correctly select the top four horses in the exact order. Although it is a tough bet to win, the superfecta can bring significant winnings if you manage to hit it.
Lessons from the last two Triple Crown winners
If you strongly believe that a horse is the clear favorite, there is an alternative strategy you can consider. Place this horse at the top position, and select four other horses to fill the remaining two positions in a trifecta key. This $1 trifecta key bet with five horses will amount to a total cost of $20. The crucial aspect of this approach is that your top selection must win, while the other four horses must secure the second and third places.
Justify was the overwhelming favorite with odds of 1-5 in the 2018 Preakness. However, Bravazo surprised everyone and finished second with odds of 15-1, while Tenfold came in third with odds of 25-1. These two horses were part of the five options you had to choose from, in addition to Justify. If you had invested in a $1 trifecta ticket, it would have cost you $20, but you would have won $148.
If the bet on Justify to win had been the same $20, the return would have been just $28.
American Pharoah dominated the 2015 Preakness, triumphing by a remarkable seven lengths with 4-5 NY betting odds. Tale of Verve, an underdog at 25-1, secured second place, while Divining Rod, at 12-1, finished third. Surprisingly, the $1 trifecta bet yielded a handsome payout of $492. This outcome proved to be a lucrative result for those who wagered on a race that heavily favored the frontrunner.
In the race, there were just eight horses competing. If a bettor decided to place a $20 bet on American Pharoah, they would have had the advantage of having most of the remaining field to finish second and third. However, if they had chosen to bet $20 on American Pharoah solely to win, their return would have been only $38.
How to handicap the Preakness Stakes
Finding a comfort zone for this race is simpler compared to locating one for the Kentucky Derby.
Strong consideration should be given to the Derby winner and top finishers in terms of wagering. Additionally, any winner of a significant prep race who either chose to skip the Derby or had a valid excuse, like an unfavorable post position or being hindered by a group of horses, should also be taken into account.
Examine horses that bypassed the Derby and were exclusively entered in the Preakness.
Obtaining a Daily Racing Form can provide additional assistance. It can be accessed online and provides valuable information about horses that are comfortable running in wet conditions, known as “in the slop.” While some horses excel in these conditions, others struggle. It is worth noting that the Preakness race was held in wet conditions in 2015, 2016, and 2018, which often leads to unexpected horses securing a place in the top three or four positions.
Be observant of the speed of the race. Take note of the horses that prefer to run near the front from the start, as well as those that hang back and aim to catch up to the leaders towards the end. In previous Preakness events, the winners have typically been among the front-runners throughout the race. However, horses that stalk or close in on tired competitors can still secure a top-four finish and potentially even win. It would be beneficial to watch earlier races on Preakness Day to determine the winning positions of horses and the condition of the track surface.
- The horses will thrive in optimal conditions and early speed will be duly rewarded.
- Positive: The aftermath of rain on a track can create a challenging environment. The surface becomes heavy or muddy, causing horses to tire more quickly. This presents an opportunity for stalkers or closers to surpass tired frontrunners.
- Messy conditions: The ground is wet, allowing for anything to happen. It poses a challenge for horses as the mud splashes back into their faces, making it difficult for them to perform well. Certain horses are simply not suited for these conditions. When heavy rain is expected, it can disproportionately affect some horses. By examining their previous performances, we can determine which horses are more inclined to perform well in such sloppy conditions.
Keep an eye on the development of horses trained by Bob Baffert during the spring season. Baffert, who has secured 16 wins, holds the top position as the leading Triple Crown trainer. Notably, the last two Triple Crown champions, Justify and American Pharoah, were products of his exceptional training. Additionally, Baffert is currently tied for the most Preakness wins, having clinched victory seven times.
History of the Preakness Stakes
A former governor of Maryland bestowed the name “Preakness Stakes” upon a victorious colt at Pimlico, thereby immortalizing the race. Known as “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans,” the race is named after the vibrant floral blanket that adorns the winning horse. With an impressive turnout, it stands as the second-most-attended horse race in North America, surpassed only by the prestigious Kentucky Derby.
Noteworthy winners
To begin with, it is evident that all 13 Triple Crown champions have emerged victorious at the Preakness.

Notable upsets
In a flashback to 1972, an argument arises about the validity of the Horses for Courses adage. One particular incident exemplifies this notion when Bee Bee Bee, a 19-1 underdog, unexpectedly defeated Riva Ridge on a sloppy track. It became evident that Riva Ridge, the previous year’s Derby winner, struggled on this particular surface. Despite this setback, Riva Ridge managed to triumph in the Belmont, leaving us to speculate that Bee Bee Bee’s victory in the Preakness, aided by the track conditions, possibly prevented a Triple Crown win for Riva Ridge.
Riva Ridge achieved a rare accomplishment by winning the first and last legs of the Triple Crown, but unfortunately fell short of winning the Preakness. This feat has only been achieved 11 times, which is fewer than the total number of Triple Crown champions.
Master Derby, the underdog at 23-1 odds, defied expectations three years later by triumphing over Foolish Pleasure, the one who had previously bested him in the Derby.
Despite finishing sixth in the Derby behind the triumphant Orb in 2013, Oxbow appeared to have slim chances of reversing the outcome. However, during the Preakness, he managed to secure a leading position with a relaxed pace. This allowed him to conserve energy and, with odds of approximately 15-1 in the Preakness Stakes betting, he had ample stamina left to claim victory.
