New York Lottery

The Empire State offers a variety of legal New York lottery games that are open to players who are 18 years old or above. You have the option to buy tickets and scratch-offs from authorized retailers or conveniently obtain them online using the NY Lottery mobile app.

A lucky ticket purchased in California successfully matched all six numbers drawn in Tuesday morning’s Powerball jackpot, setting a new record of $2.04 billion. The winning numbers were 10, 33, 41, 47, 56, and the Powerball number was 10. Consequently, the jackpot has been reset, and we eagerly anticipate its potential to grow even higher once more.

If you’re looking to play online games on your phone, the NY Lottery app does not provide that option. Your top choice for such games would be one of the sweepstakes apps available.

What NY lottery games you can play

There are two main categories of games: lotto games and draw games. Lotto games are played across multiple states and involve tickets purchased from various locations. On the other hand, draw games are exclusive to New York state. When purchasing tickets from retailers, players have the choice between “quick pick,” where a computer randomly selects numbers, or “pick your own” where players manually choose their numbers. The game draws are televised across the state.

Powerball

For just $2, Powerball players have the opportunity to win a massive jackpot. The game involves selecting five numbers ranging from one to 69, as well as a Powerball number ranging from one to 26. Six random numbers are then drawn. If you manage to match three white numbers, you win $7. Additionally, if you match two white numbers along with the Powerball number, you also secure a win. However, the ultimate prize is obtained by correctly matching all five numbers and the Powerball, which grants you a prize exceeding $100 million. Following a jackpot win, the Powerball jackpot resets to $40 million.

Powerball drawings take place thrice a week, specifically on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Additionally, players have the option to participate in a “Power Play” wager, which, for an additional $1, can multiply their winnings by up to 10 times.

Mega Millions

Introduced in 2002, Mega Millions made its debut in New York State. The draws for Mega Millions occur every Tuesday and Friday. Throughout 2019, the jackpots consistently reached an impressive range of $150 million to $220 million. To participate, players must select five main numbers from a pool of one to 70 and also choose a “Mega Ball” number from one to 25. If a player manages to match all five main numbers and the Mega Ball, they will secure the coveted jackpot. Similar to Powerball, after a Mega Millions win, the jackpot resets to $40 million. Additionally, players have the option to purchase the “Megaplier” for an extra dollar. This option allows for the multiplication of all non-jackpot winnings by a factor of two to four times.

New York Lotto

The New York Lotto holds its draws on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. It costs $1 to play two games. With 59 numbers available, you can choose six. If you manage to match three numbers, you win $1. However, the New York Lotto has been losing popularity due to its lower payouts in comparison to larger jackpot games such as Powerball and Mega Millions. Winners of the Lotto jackpot can choose between receiving a one-time payment along with annual payments or a lump-sum cash option.

Cash4Life

Cash4Life was established in 2014 through a partnership between New York and New Jersey, replacing the previous Sweet Million lottery that was exclusive to New York. The game involves selecting five numbers from a pool of 60 for the Monday and Thursday draws, along with a “Cash Ball” number. The jackpot offers a daily payout of $1,000 for life, and there is a consolation prize of $1,000 per week for life. Winners also have the choice to receive a lump sum of either $7 million or $1 million, depending on the initial prize. Cash4Life is currently offered in nine states across the US, including Florida, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Numbers

Numbers is a lottery game that takes place two times daily in the local area. The ticket price ranges from 50 cents to $1. To participate, you need to choose three numbers ranging from zero to nine. The prizes you win are determined by the number of matches you have, as well as the specific order in which your selected numbers appear. Numbers offers a distinctive payout system, where the prizes are awarded based on the precise arrangement of the drawn balls.

 • If you correctly match the drawn winning numbers in their exact order, you will win the jackpot with odds of 1,000:1 in the “Straight Play” game.
 • The rules for the “Box Plays” are slightly distinct. In order to secure the prizes ranging from $80 to $160 (for entries of 50 cents to $1), it is required to match the winning numbers in any sequence.
 • If you select a three-digit number with two digits being the same (for example, 3-4-3), and the outcome is 3-3-4, you will win the prize for all three combinations, known as the “3-Way Box.”
 • The “6-Way Box” also awards a prize of $40/$80 when you choose a three-digit number with three distinct digits (for example, 4-5-6).

Win4

Win4 is a game that shares similarities with Numbers, but with a slight variation – instead of choosing three numbers, you get to choose four. If you manage to match the winning numbers in the exact order (known as Straight Play), you will be rewarded with a $5,000 jackpot for just a $1 ticket. The game holds two draws each day, one at midday and another in the evening. Similar to Numbers, Win4 also offers a selection of “Box Plays” where you can win prizes by selecting identical numbers. The tickets for this game are available for purchase at either 50 cents or $1, with varying prizes that correspond to your choices.

 • To play the 4-Way Box, choose a four-digit number with three digits being the same. This bet offers a payout of $600 for a 50 cent play and $1,200 for a $1 play.
 • To win the 6-Way Box game, choose a four-digit number that contains two sets of identical pairs. Winning this game will reward you with $400 for a 50 cent play or $800 for a $1 play.
 • Choose a four-digit number with distinct digits, and you can win either $100 or $200 by betting 50 cents or $1, respectively.

If you match the winning numbers drawn in their exact order, you will receive a payout for Straight/Box Plays. The payout amounts vary depending on the type of Straight/Box you have. The 4-Way Straight/Box pays $3,100, the 6-Way Straight/Box pays $2,900, the 12-Way Straight/Box pays $2,700, and the 24-Way Straight/Box pays $2,600 for your $1 winning ticket.

The “Booster Ball” promotion is applicable to both Win4 and Numbers games. On Booster Ball days, there is an additional drawing that takes place right after the regular one. Depending on the draw of a special ball, a percentage bonus of 5%, 10%, or 20% will be added to all winnings.

Take 5

To participate in Take 5, you need to pay $1 per game. You have the opportunity to select five numbers from a range of 1 to 39, and subsequently, five numbers will be drawn. Depending on how many numbers you match, you can win prizes ranging from two to five numbers. If you manage to match all five numbers, you will win the jackpot. In case there are no winners with five matching numbers, the jackpot amount carries over to the next game. Additionally, fifty percent of the game sales contribute towards the prize money, with 20% allocated to the winners of the jackpot. Prizes are also awarded for matching four, three, and two numbers.

Pick 10

Playing Pick 10 costs $1 and offers the opportunity to win a $500,000 jackpot. In order to play, one must select 10 numbers from a pool of 80 and successfully match all 10 with the 20 numbers drawn. There are also prizes awarded for correctly choosing nine, eight, seven, six, or zero numbers. Pick 10 drawings occur every day at 8:30 p.m.

Quick Draw

Quick Draw operates in a manner akin to bingo or keno, where players have the option to select between one and ten “spots” for each game. Additionally, Quick Pick is available, and tickets can be purchased at prices ranging from $1 to $10 per game. Quick Draw games occur every four minutes, running continuously throughout the day and most of the night. If all ten numbers on your ticket match the numbers drawn, you become the lucky winner of $100,000. A prize of $5,000 awaits those who manage to match nine numbers, while matching zero numbers still grants you a prize of $5.

What to do if you win the New York Lottery

If your prize is $601 or less, you can redeem it at any NY Lottery retailer. However, for larger prizes, it is necessary to visit a lottery claims center. To claim your lotto winnings, you must schedule an appointment. In the case of prizes exceeding $250,000, only four claim centers are available as options.

 • Buffalo: 165 Genesee St.
 • Fishkill’s address is 18 Westage Business Center, Hudson Valley Towne Center, Suite 6.
 • The South Service Road of Long Island is located at 45.
 • The address for Syracuse is 620 Erie Blvd. West.

To schedule an appointment, it is recommended to use the NY Lottery website. It is important to note that each office operates on varying hours. Alternatively, winners have the choice to mail their tickets to the NY Lottery. The required documents include a filled-out claim form obtained from the lottery, the signed ticket, and a copy of your government-issued ID.

NY lottery tax winnings

Lottery prizes exceeding $5,000 are liable to state tax, which the gaming commission must deduct from any winnings. The state tax amounts to 8.82% of the prize, in addition to the standard federal tax rate of 24%. Moreover, New York City imposes an extra 3.876% tax on the prize value.

NY lottery revenue proceeds

All lottery revenue in the state is allocated towards public education programs, following the distribution of prizes. The sale of lottery tickets has generated over $64 billion since the late 1960s. In New York, lottery tickets are available for purchase at 17,000 retailers, including 7-Eleven stores, pharmacies, and tobacconists both in New York City and throughout the state. These retailers receive a commission based on ticket sales.

Online lotteries and games

At present, individual tickets for any NY lottery cannot be purchased online. Nevertheless, online subscriptions for draw games such as Mega Millions and Cash4Life are available for purchase. Additionally, certain New York Lottery promotions are accessible to mobile players.

The New York Lottery app is accessible on iOS and Android devices, allowing you to conveniently check multiple draws.

NY lotteries laws and history

In 1967, the New York State Lottery was introduced as the third lottery in the United States, following the lotteries of New Hampshire and Puerto Rico. With the primary objective of supporting education, the NY Lottery has successfully generated billions of dollars, contributing to various state-wide projects.

The lottery is overseen by the New York Lottery and Gaming Commission.

Record NY state lottery winners

Since 2010, when New York joined Powerball, the state’s residents have celebrated six victorious jackpot wins.

The 1937 Flatbush Avenue Dodgers Group of Jericho syndicate holds the record with the highest winnings of $201.9 million in 2011. Nevertheless, in 2019, a different group managed to surpass this milestone by winning the largest Mega Millions jackpot in the history of the New York State Lottery. Twenty-three coworkers from Long Island won a staggering $176 million after choosing a lump-sum payment. Additionally, in 2015, a resident of Manhattan secured the biggest jackpot to date in the New York Lottery Powerball, taking home $136 million.

Bingo halls in New York state

In New York, bingo halls have been legally operating since 2017. However, in that year, a restriction was imposed that only allows players who are 18 years old or older to participate in bingo games. This means that minors are no longer permitted to play. Similar to lotteries, the New York State Gaming Commission is responsible for regulating bingo. Along with the restriction on minors, there have also been changes to the prize payout limits. Previously, the maximum amount that could be won in a single bingo game was $1,000, but it has now been increased to $5,000. Additionally, the overall prizes that can be won on a single occasion have gone up from $3,000 to $15,000.

Dozens of legalized and regulated bingo halls in New York City offer real money online casino games throughout the week. These operations, primarily held in clubs and American Legion halls, are mostly small-scale. However, standalone clubs and bingo palaces can attract large crowds.

The game is conducted on grids measuring 5×5. Winning jackpots is possible by striking columns, rows, and completing the entire grid. In addition, various bingo halls may provide raffles and prize draws known as “Bell Jar.” Participating in the game can be as affordable as 25 cents. Larger halls within the state offer computerized bingo terminals, and the jackpots can reach up to $6,000.
